The following remarks were given by Marie Henderson from Fox Lake Cree Nation at the Regional Cumulative Effects Assessment Community Hearing: Fox Lake Cree Nation.
“There’s other stories out there by other people. I mean, a lot of my people worked hard. None of them heard of welfare back then. There was no such thing as welfare, because we survived by hunting and trapping. And that’s how it was, that’s how they made money. And then the construction came, people got hired, they didn’t stay long on the job. They either got fired. That’s when the welfare system came in there, took away pride in people.” – Marie Henderson, Fox Lake Cree Nation
